From the Desk of Gillian Levi
As CEO of Odigo Learning, I’ve seen how quickly the construction industry is evolving—not just in how we build, but in how we run our businesses.
This month’s focus is about embracing that evolution and seeing AI as a tool for business growth, not a replacement for human expertise.
The mindset shift is simple but powerful: AI doesn’t take away from your experience—it amplifies it. When used strategically, AI can help contractors like you save time, improve accuracy, and communicate more effectively with clients and teams.
Whether you use it to generate proposals, draft marketing messages, or analyze bid specs, AI is an ally that helps you lead smarter and grow faster. Remember, leadership isn’t just about what you build—it’s about how you innovate.

Highlights from Odigo Learning: Bid Calendars
A Bid Calendar is a simple tool that helps you track upcoming opportunities, deadlines, and submissions so you never miss a chance to compete. It’s not just about dates—it’s about staying organized, reducing stress, and giving your business the consistency it needs to grow.
Why it matters: Contractors often lose out on bids not because of poor pricing or lack of qualifications, but because deadlines were overlooked or preparation started too late. A Bid Calendar keeps you ready.
-
Plan ahead, stay ahead: Use your calendar to track recurring bid opportunities so nothing sneaks up on you.
-
Back-plan from submission: Start with the due date, then assign tasks backward (site visit, subcontractor quotes, pricing, compliance forms).
-
Start simple: You don’t need a fancy app or special software—Excel or Google Sheets works just fine to get started today.
-
Key headers to include on your spreadsheet: Agency/Client, Project Name, Bid Due Date, Site Visit Date, Estimator Assigned, Subcontractor Quotes Needed, Status, Outcome.
-
Learn from every bid: Don’t just log submissions—track outcomes. Wins and losses both provide valuable lessons.

Contractor Q&A
QUESTION:
“Can subcontractors bid on construction projects? If so, how?”
ANSWER:
Yes—subcontractors can absolutely bid, but the process looks different than for general contractors. Here’s how to approach it:
-
Register with platforms where primes post opportunities.
-
Build relationships with general contractors (GCs).
-
Prepare a subcontractor bid package.
-
Ask about subcontractor outreach requirements.
-
Stay consistent—bidding regularly builds trust with GCs.
IMPORTANT TIP:
Create a simple Subcontractor Bid Tracker in Excel or Google Sheets to log GCs, projects, bid dates, and follow-ups.

Your Monthly Move
This week, visit a site where you regularly search for bids (e.g., CivCastUSA.com or PlanHub). Identify 1–2 new opportunities and add them to your Bid Calendar with due dates and back-planned tasks.
Then, schedule a recurring weekly search block for new opportunities. If your calendar is packed, use part of your lunch on Fridays from 12:00–12:30 PM—just pick a day and time and put it on your calendar every week.
Your future self (and your business) will thank you.
At Odigo Learning, we’re here to help you compete, win, and grow.
